Juma-Lautta, mutiny raft

Helsingin Juhlaviikot, 2012

Designed and built together with architect Janne Karjalainen.

Juma-Lautta was a raft made out of building site leftover materials and castaway found on the shores of Helsinki. It worked both as a performance platform, and a mutiny raft against the polished hype of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

We wanted to raise discussion on the exclusiveness of maritime Helsinki and expose the ecological issues regarding Finnish design. Also, the state of the Baltic Sea and the role of capital city Helsinki in marine nature reservation were pointed out during our performative sails.

Juma-Lautta was build to the form of tetra that could be opened into a 6x6m triangle. We enabled free rides on the waters of Eläintarhanlahti, and on the Night of Arts 2012 the raft hosted an overview on the fragile nature of the Baltic Sea by researcher Niklas Virkkala, a performance by Anna-Sofia Sysser, Katja Sallinen and Akuliina Niemi and a movie night with Finnish short films.
